Engineering at Maryland by Providing Opportunities With Research Reactor
The Engineering at Maryland by Providing Opportunities With Research Reactor (EMPOWRR) program is providing funding and opportunities for traditionally underrepresented from Morgan State University (MSU) to access and utilize the UMDRF. MSU students have the opportunity to participate in the UMDRF’s Reactor Operator Training Program and to use the facility for research projects in the MEGR 490/491 Senior Design Project class.
Reactor Operator Training
MSU students can apply to the Reactor Operator Training Program where they will study to become licensed as Reactor Operators at the Maryland University Training Reactor and play a crucial role in operating and maintaining the MUTR. 2 RO Candidates from MSU will be selected and provided with a stipend to participate in Operator Training. Operator Training takes place over the course of approximately 1 year starting in early October and ending with a licensing exam administered by the Nuclear Regulatory Commission. Students don’t need a background in nuclear science or engineering to join the program; the training will provide comprehensive training covering mechanical and instrumentation systems, nuclear science, operational procedures, radiation safety, and health physics.
Senior Design Project
2 students a year from MSU can apply to utilize the UMDRF for radiation related senior research projects. These students will receive a stipend to cover travel costs and purchases of materials for their research projects, as well as access to the UMDRF.
