Neutron Activation Analysis Workshop

The University of Maryland Radiation Facilities, in collaboration with NCNR scientists, will be offering a Neutron Activation Analysis Workshop.

The workshop will be hosted at the Maryland University Training Reactor from June 7th-9th. It is open to students and staff from the University of Maryland, NIST, and other parties that are interested in conducting and/or analyzing NAA experiments and data.

The curriculum will include:

        • Mechanism
      • UMD Reactor Introduction
      • Introduction to Radiation Safety
    • Afternoon
      • HPGe counting of check sources
        • Calculating half-lives
        • Efficiency calculations
      • Reactor tour
  • Day 2
    • Morning
      • HPGe discussion
      • Analysis planning
      • NAA equation
    • Afternoon
      • Calculate irradiation, decay, and counting time of samples
      • Demo of loading and firing NAA sample
      • Counting of activated samples
  • Day 3
    • NAA equation uncertainty propagation
    • Calculate the analyte contents in soil samples irradiated on Day 2
    • Corrections for differing irradiation times
