Student Projects

Listed below are some projects and research opportunities for University of Maryland students. Please contact us at radiation@umd.edu if you are interested in working on any of them.

  • CAD Drawings and Electrical schematics
    • We are seeking a student experienced with CAD to help design new components and to digitize and update old mechanical drawings and electrical schematics for the Radiation Facilities’ equipment.

  • Glass Toughening with Neutrons
    • Borosilicate glass samples will be irradiated in the reactor to test the effect of neutron irradiation on their fracture toughness. The project will involve preparing, irradiating, and measuring the toughness of samples.

  • Neutron Detector
    • Development of a small, Arduino based, neutron scintillation detector. The project will involve design, construction and testing of the detector.

  • HPGe Sample Changer
    • Designing and building a robotic sample changer to allow for greater gamma ray spectroscopy capabilities with the Radiation Facilities High Purity Germanium Detector.

  • Neutron Activation Analysis Case Study
    • Performing a full neutron activation analysis in order to demonstrate the MUTR’s NAA capabilities.

  • Sample Positioning System for the Linac
    • Design and build a 3 axis positioning system to allow for precisely controlled irradiations in the linac.

  • Accelerator Simulation
    • Performing simulations of the linac beamline
