Gamma Ray Spectrometry

5 High Purity Germanium Gamma Ray Spectrometers (HPGEs) are used to support reactor operations and research. The UMDRF staff can assist with isotope identification and activity determination. One HPGE has been characterized for use with Mirion Technologies’ Laboratory Sourceless Calibration Software (LabSOCS) and can be used with a wide variety of sample geometries.

Liquid Scintillation Counter

Hidex Triathler Liquid Scintillation Counter is maintained for assaying samples containing tritium or other beta emitting nuclides.

Ion Chamber Dosimetry

A calibrated Standard Imaging SuperMAX electrometer can be used with 2 farmer ion chambers simultaneously for active gamma ray dosimetry.

Radiochromic Film Dosimetry

Far West Technologies radiochromic films are used as passive gamma ray and electron dosimeters for doses between 0.1 and 20 MRad. These films can be easily placed in close proximity to samples for accurate dosimetry and are dose rate independent up to 100 GRad/s.

Radiation Survey Instruments

The UMDRF has a variety of radiation survey instruments to support operations and experiments.

Radioactive Sources

Alpha, beta, gamma, and sealed neutron sources are available for calibrations and experiments.
