Visitor Registration Form

The following are requirements for tours:
- No weapons of ANY kind.
- Tour sizes may be limited; the tour size must be kept to 12 guests per UMD Radiation Facility escort.
- A portion of the tour is not accessible. Visitors must be able to climbs stairs to view inside the reactor pool.
- Closed-toed, closed-backed shoes are required at all times to enter the building. No sandals, flip flops, or clogs are permitted.
- No electronic devices, such as, but not limited to: cell phones, cameras, and MP3 players. Pacemakers are safe within the facility.
- No photographs may be taken within the facility.
- No bags, backpacks, purses, or bulky coats.
- Tours may be cancelled at any time without advance notice.
- All persons and possessions are subject to search.
- Stay within sight of your escort at all times.
- Minors must be accompanied by an adult.
- Do not open any doors in facility.

In the event of an alarm, follow your escorts instructions.

Bring an acceptable form of ID: University ID, state/government issued driver's licenses, passports, or government clearances.

Forms must be received a minimum of 48 hours before scheduled visit.

Visitor Awareness Training

<strong>Visitor Instructions</strong>
<ul>
 	<li>The Maryland University Training Reactor (MUTR) is a small nuclear reactor used for training and education.</li>
 	<li>The MUTR is licensed by the Nuclear Regulatory Commission (NRC).</li>
 	<li>We are required to maintain your radiation exposure As Low as Reasonably Achievable (ALARA).</li>
 	<li>Obeying your escort’s instructions and all posted warnings will ensure your safety in the facility.</li>
 	<li>Some information about radiation:
<ul>
 	<li>Ionizing radiation is particles or waves that can damage an atom or molecule through atomic interactions.</li>
 	<li>You are always being exposed to background radiation, totaling around 600 mRem (a unit of radiation dose) per year. This is less than 1% of the amount of radiation it takes to cause harm.</li>
 	<li>As a member of the public, your radiation exposure above background must be less than 100 mRem per year. Your actual exposure here will likely be less than 1 mRem.</li>
</ul>
</li>
 	<li>You will be required to leave personal items outside of the reactor building to minimize the risk of dropping them into the reactor pool. Do not touch the reactor pool.</li>
 	<li>You will be issued a dosimeter to track your radiation exposure while you are here.</li>
 	<li>If a facility alarm sounds, immediately comply with staff or police instructions.</li>
 	<li>If you are subject to another occupational dosimetry program, you are responsible for contacting the UMD Radiation Safety Officer to obtain a record of your dose.</li>
